Puma has reignited the notoriously divisive trend for platform sneakers.

The German sports brand on Friday announced the Australian launch of its new $ 150 Cali Wedge, a style of leather platform sneakers inspired by the “wedge sneakers” invented by French fashion designer Isabel Marant in 2012.

Wedge sneakers are known to elongate the body, making the legs appear longer and slimmer without the instability or discomfort of the heels.

The launch of the Puma platforms comes nearly a decade after the wedge design was first seen on Marant’s catwalk, after she decided to create comfortable shoes that still lengthened women’s legs. flattering way.

The 53-year-old designer told Fashionista in September 2012 that she often stuck corks inside her sneakers to make her look taller, which prompted her to invent a shoe that uplifted women without stiletto heel.

“The sneakers are so comfortable but at the same time, [they’re] not very elegant. Having a little heel in it makes a difference, it gives you legs, ”she said.

Manrepeller dubbed the wedge sneaker “fashion’s most controversial shoe” at the time, but models and music icons have remained staunch fans.
